Michael Boyle at Ground Zero, a Call for Heroes

September 14, 2001

When Jimmy Boyle, retired city firefighter, first heard on Tuesday morning that a plane had hit the World Trade Center, he knew his son, Michael, a city firefighter, was supposed to be off-duty.

Michael, 37, loved politics almost as much as the fire department, and he was planning to go out to Queens from Manhattan to work on a City Council primary campaign.

But his father also knew that many firefighters look on their occupation as more than a job, and he remembered what happened when Michael fought his first fire six years ago.

He stayed at his post in the fur vault of a burning department store even though the heat got so intense it left burns all around his face mask.

"He came out exhausted, beaten," said his father, who lives in Westbury. "He said, 'It was hot, but I couldn't leave, Dad, because I wasn't supposed to.' I said, 'Mike, you did a great job.'"
Jimmy Boyle, head of the firefighters' union during the 1980s and '90s, was in Brooklyn on Tuesday, and what he knew about his son and his son's colleagues made him very worried. He set off on foot across the Brooklyn Bridge toward the World Trade Center, hoping not to find Michael.

He was right to be worried. Michael Boyle was among the 300 New York City firefighters still missing yesterday. Among them were two other firefighters - and probably many others - who also didn't really have to be there, but wound up inside the doomed towers because of their sense of duty.

One of them was David Arce, 36, who grew up in Westbury with Michael Boyle. The two had been best friends since childhood, served in the same fire company and worked together on political campaigns. Arce, also off-duty on Tuesday, had planned to go to Queens with Michael.
Marjorie Ginobbi, who lives next door to the Arce family and watched the two boys grow up, wasn't surprised David wound up in a job that involves helping people.

"Anything I needed help with, he was always there. Cutting the grass, painting, anything that needed to be carried - he was just a wonderful kid."

When he grew up, she said, "It was like he had been born to be a firefighter. He loved the work - always smiling." Arce's father, Dr. A.G. Arce, died of diabetes in February. His mother, Margaret, a geriatric nurse, said her son and Michael Boyle "were like twin brothers."
"David grew up playing with fire engines, and the desire to be a firefighter never went away," she said. "It's a typical fireman story. It was the love of his life. There's such a closeness with firefighters, a beautiful thing to watch, and the families have to accept whatever is dealt."
Perhaps the best-known firefighter who didn't have to be in the World Trade Center was Capt. Timothy Stackpole of Brooklyn. He was fighting a fire in a city-owned building in 1998 when the floor collapsed, dropping him and two firemen 10 feet into a roaring blaze. The flames burned more than 30 percent of his body.

The city agreed to pay the three $4.2 million after their lawyers argued that the city hadn't heeded warnings about the building's structural flaws. Court records don't specify the individual payments, but it was clear Stackpole could have retired with a large nest egg and a lucrative disability pension.

Instead, after two months in a hospital, he spent many painful hours in the gym rebuilding his body and went back to work as soon as he could pass a physical.

"He came back when someone else would have retired happily," Msgr. Thomas Brady, a former fire department chaplain, said. At his church, Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church in Marine Park, Brooklyn, Stackpole taught children and counseled couples about to marry. "He was a very religious man in the best sense," Brady said.

So far this week, the monsignor said, he has heard of about eight or 10 missing firefighters whose fathers were also firefighters. "Every day I hear of more - it's in the blood."
As Jimmy Boyle searched for his son on Tuesday, he reached the World Trade Center just as one of the towers collapsed, showering the street with debris and temporarily blinding him with dust. He narrowly escaped injury by groping his way into a doorway. Finding out nothing at the scene, he went to his son's firehouse nearby and opened Michael's locker.

He found what he hoped wouldn't be there - Michael's car keys and wallet.

Later, he learned that Michael and David had jumped on a fire engine at the last minute in their civilian clothes. "If they had to die, it was fitting that they died together," Boyle's father said yesterday.

As Michael Boyle and his friend rode toward the World Trade Center on Tuesday, the burn marks from Michael's first fire six years ago were still visible on his face.

Michael Boyle, a firefighter for the New York Fire Department, joined thedepartment in 1996 and hoped to be president of the firefighters union one day, as his father once was. James Boyle, a retired firefighter who was president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association from 1983 to 1986 and again from 1990 to 1993, spoke to his son briefly themorning of Sept. 11, then set out on foot from Brooklyn to the World Trade Center after thesecond hijacked jet struck. He was about two blocks away when Tower 2 collapsed. “It lookedlike it was 10 o’clock at night and I realized it would be a miracle if he was alive,” Boylesaid.

A Crusade for Fire Radios

New York Daily News - Monday, February 28, 2005
By ADAM LISBERG

DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Retired firefighter Jimmy Boyle was frustrated by the FDNY's unreliable radios long before 9/11 - but after his brave son died in the terror attacks, his battle turned personal. Firefighter Michael Boyle was rescuing victims inside the north tower when FDNY brass sounded a call to evacuate. But few of the Bravest heard the orders over the patchwork of failing frequencies. Inspired by the memory of his 33-year-old son, Jimmy Boyle is bringing his fight for better radio equipment to Congress as a homeland security adviser to New York Rep. Peter King. "I was yelling for years," said Boyle, 66, who lives in Westbury, L.I. "The radios didn't work in 1993. The radios didn't work in 2001. And guess what? The radios don't work today. That really gets to me." King (R-L.I.) was named chairman of the House homeland security subcommittee on emergency preparedness this month, and has hired Boyle to help him investigate radio flaws and communication troubles that endanger rescuers. "He has such a strong personal motivation, and he has incredible sources," King said. "I'm getting a lot of advice and a lot of knowledge about the radios from Jimmy. He really knows this issue inside and out." King plans to hold hearings on the radios as soon as this spring, using the city's problems as a worst-case example of communication failures that hinder cops and firefighters nationwide. Boyle said he will not stop his campaign until better equipment is made available to firefighters, cops and other first responders. "It has to be a national effort, but New York should be where they try it out," said the gregarious 25- year FDNY veteran, who served two terms as the city firefighters union president. "I've spoken with people who were in the north tower, and they never had a sense of urgency that the collapse was imminent," Boyle said. "My son died there."

Tragedy turned many family members into activists

By SHELLEY EMLING
Atlanta Journal-Constitution Staff Writer

Monica Gabrielle, who lost her husband, Richard, on Sept. 11, rallied in Washington in June to support creation of a bipartisan commission to study the events surrounding the terror attacks. Activism "is what keeps me sane," she said.

NEW YORK -- Monica Gabrielle can't believe what she has turned into.
Only a year ago, her most pressing worry was that her husband, Richard, might wrap himself around a tree in one of the car racing lessons he had taken up.

She spent most of her free time trying to convince her husband of 28 years that there was no reason to wait for their 30th anniversary to take a big trip to Italy.

They were happy. They were settled. Their daughter Nicole was grown. And they were toying with the idea of early retirement.

But all that was before Richard Gabrielle, 50, left at 7 a.m. Sept. 11 for his job as an insurance broker at the World Trade Center and never came back.

Now, Monica Gabrielle has been transformed from quiet wife and mother into a very active activist. She's doing things -- besides profoundly missing her husband -- she never dreamed she'd do.Gabrielle is one of thousands of grieving executives, homemakers, psychologists and others -- all family members of victims of the terrorist attacks -- who have banded together to change laws and lobby Congress so that a legacy of change is left in their loved ones' honor.

A year after their loved ones died, the family members have formed a dozen or so Sept. 11 advocacy groups. They've grown accustomed to the spotlight, even if they're still not entirely comfortable in it. They answer reporters' questions. They speak to politicians. Some are even on a first-name basis with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

"Last year, the furthest thing from my mind was any kind of lobbying, public speaking, advocating, writing letters to the editor or even seeing a therapist, for that matter," Gabrielle said. Now, "this work is what drives me. This is what gets me up in the morning. This is what keeps me sane."

One group of more than 600 family members filed a federal lawsuit last month against officials of Saudi Arabia, banks and charities, charging they financed Osama bin Laden's terrorist network.

Some family members have even become celebrities of sorts.

Marian Fontana, who lost her firefighter husband, has appeared on CNN and other networks and was the guest of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) at the State of the Union address this year.

She and others say they have to stay in the public eye so that no one ever forgets what happened.

Over the past year, they've waged their struggles in groups as large as Families of September 11th, which boasts 1,200 members and has one office in Washington and plans for another in New York, and as small as September 11th Advocates, made up of a handful of New Jersey widows.

Many of these groups have banded together to form the Coalition of 9/11 Family Groups, which is pushing for at least half of the 16-acre World Trade Center site to be turned into a permanent memorial.

Steve Push, co-founder of Families of September 11th, said the work of the groups is just getting started.

"Unfortunately, Islamic terrorism will be with us for a while, so we're going to be around for a while," said Push, who lost his wife, Lisa Raines, 42, when American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon. "For all the pomp and circumstance, there's been very little accomplished in the past year when it comes to homeland security."

The family members are galled that the U.S. intelligence system failed to prevent the terrorist hijackings. Recently, they pushed House members to engineer a surprise vote in favor of an independent commission to investigate the attacks. The Senate has yet to approve the measure, and the idea is opposed by President Bush.

But family members seeking a broader investigation into intelligence failures are far from discouraged.

Hundreds of defiant parents, children, siblings and others rallied on Capitol Hill in mid-June to demand an investigation into what the government could have done to prevent the attacks.
"My question is what do we know today that we didn't know a year ago that could have prevented Sept. 11?" said Lynn Castrianno, whose brother, Leonard, 30, died on the 105th floor of the south tower.

In early August, Castrianno, a psychologist in Omaha, Neb., joined other family members in Washington to push for the creation of an independent commission through visits with a dozen or so senators.

Castrianno said she surprised herself by not being intimidated when speaking with politicians.
"We can't speak their language, because we're not politicians, but we can wear buttons with our loved ones' pictures, which humanizes this issue for them," she said. "A few years ago I would have been in awe, but now I recognize these are just people who have their own agendas and that we have our own agenda as well."

Sally Regenhard's agenda includes stricter building codes and a federal investigation into what went awry after the hijacked planes struck the World Trade Center.

Regenhard, who lost her firefighter son, has left her job at a nursing home and plunged herself full-time into her new passion: improving skyscraper safety.

As founder of the Skyscraper Safety Campaign, she recently got some of what she wanted: New York City officials announced plans for sweeping changes to codes that govern how high-rise buildings are protected against fire and structural damage and how they are evacuated in an emergency. But that's not enough for Regenhard.

Finding out whether human error in the design of the World Trade Center contributed to its collapse has become her life's work.

Regenhard has read everything she can about the World Trade Center's beams, doors and floor plans. She never hesitates to wave poster-sized photographs of her 28-year-old son, Christian, in the face of politicians whenever she has a chance.

In recent months her group has appeared before Congress and embarked on a national speaking tour.

"I don't understand why everyone doesn't want to get all the answers," she said.
In general, family members say they've had to fight for every answer, which is what has spurred so many to become activists.

"We have been met by roadblocks, confidentiality agreements, national security issues and on and on," Gabrielle said.

"Last year, I thought my job working for a marketing management consulting firm was stressful," she said. "Today, I realize it was a cakewalk."

Cited in 9/11 Deaths Deny Fire Families Right to Radio Suit

The Chief-Leader - Friday, May 13, 2005
BY GINGER ADAMS OTIS

Relatives of a dozen firefighters killed on 9/11 expressed anger and disappointment last week when a Federal appeals court tossed out their lawsuit against radio giant Motorola and the city. In a 21-page decision, Manhattan's 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals acknowledged the "great sacrifice" made by firefighters, but said that the plaintiffs had waived their right to sue by choosing to receive money from the Victim Compensation Fund. 'Miscarriage of Justice' "It's an immense miscarriage of justice," said Sally Regenhard, founder of the Skyscraper Safety Campaign and a plaintiff in the lawsuit. "We, and the victims we represent, are being denied our right to due process." Ms. Regenhard's 28-year-old son Christian, a Probationary Firefighter, perished along with his entire crew from Engine Company 279 when the towers collapsed. She has maintained that her son, whom she called a "disciplined person," would have evacuated if he'd heard such a command. The multi-million dollar suit blamed Motorola and the city for "faulty hand-held radios" that kept some firefighters from hearing evacuation orders before the Twin Towers came down. Motorola has said that communication problems on 9/11 were caused by an overloaded network, not its Sabre radios. But the lawsuit cited the 1993 WTC bombing as proof that city officials had known for years that the radio system didn't always work property in skyscrapers. Firefighters on the upper floors of the towers couldn't consistently communicate with commanders below during that attack. System Unchanged That same radio system was used in 2001, the suit alleged. Had the plaintiffs gotten a chance to state their case in front of a jury, lawyers planned to show footage of firefighters unsuccessfully trying to talk to each other via the Sabre radios on 9/11. "The Victim Compensation Fund was not designed to protect families Ñ it's a complete misnomer," Ms. Regenhard said bitterly. "It was designed to make sure that the truth about what really happened that day never comes out. It should have been called 'The Guilty Parties' Protection Plan."

WTC Victim Names to be Read by Sibs

WTC victim names to be read by sibs
By PAUL D. COLFORDDAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

The names of the 2,749 killed at the World Trade Center will be read aloud by siblings of the victims during this year's commemoration ceremony.

The special role for the victims' brothers and sisters was revealed in a recent letter to 9/11 families signed by Gov. Pataki and Mayor Bloomberg.

The solemn roll call was read by victims' parents and grandparents during the annual ceremony last year and by children of the lost in 2003.

"There's been a strong response. We've been flooded with names," said Christy Ferer, the mayor's liaison to the victims' families and a key organizer of the annual observance.
"We'll probably have to do a lottery, as we did before, to see who reads," said Ferer, widow of former Port Authority executive director Neil Levin, who was killed on 9/11.

As in the past three years, the fourth anniversary of the terror attacks will be punctuated by four moments of silence.

They will be observed at 8:46 a.m., when the first hijacked plane slammed into the north tower; 9:03 a.m., when the south tower was hit; 9:59 a.m., when the south tower fell, and 10:29 a.m., when the north tower collapsed.

Victims' families will also be allowed to descend into Ground Zero and gather at the footprints of the twin towers.

The footprints, which mark the 200-by-200-foot perimeters of the towers, hold special meaning for many relatives, especially for the loved ones of the 1,200 victims whose remains were not identified or recovered.

Until the World Trade Center Memorial opens in 2009, access to the footprints will likely remain limited to the annual observances.

"The ceremony will conclude at approximately noon. However, the site will remain open to families until 4 p.m.," the letter from Pataki and Bloomberg says.

Siblings who wish to read names during the ceremony next month can call (212) 442-8953.

Dear Randy, As a retired Firefighter I would like to commend you on this inspirational piece of artwork. The days following September 11th were tough for all firefighters around the world as we watched the scenes from Ground Zero. Knowing that I had lost so many of my brother firefighters and the thoughts of their families without their firefighter coming home was a very emotional time for me. The love of my life, Vicki, had secretly been working on a piece for me called Brothers. It depicts three firefighters, one in distress and his two brothers helping him to safety. This was the start of many renderings that Vicki would do in Pen & Ink. Although I am in the middle of reconstructing our web site I will give you an inside link to take a look at her wonderful work. Keep in mind that the shopping cart has been deactivated and if you have any questions or comments, please contact me at eric@the-stone-house.com. Keep up the great work and keep the memories of America's Bravest alive. Eric Lagesten - Chapel Hill, NC

I wanted to sign the book and tell you that that poster is a beautiful tribute to those who we lost on that awful day. They may be gone but their memories stay within the relms of my heart and memory. They were all truly special people and showed us that good still can overcome evil. Saying that they are some of New York's finest doesn't even come close to the unsurmountable respect that I have for them. Thank you for keeping their memory alive. You have done a wonderful job :) Sincerely, Joni White Winchester, VA

I AM A VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER FOR LITTLE TOWN IN TENNESSEE. WHEN THE 9-11 INCIDENT HAPPENED I FELT A TREMEDOUS CHUNK BEING RIPPED OUT OF THE FAMILY I AM A PART OF. MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO THE AFFECTED FAMILIES. I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO SEE THE FIREMEN FROM N.Y. COME THROUGH MY COUNTY ON THE "THANK YOU AMERICA TOUR" ON BICYCLES. THE DAY WILL ALWAYS BE IN MY HEART BECAUSE I MET THE FIREMAN ON 11-25 WHICH IS MY BIRTHDAY. MY FUTURE PLANS ARE JOINING A FULL TIME FIRE DEPT. WHEN I FINISH COLLEGE. I HOPE THE PRIDE STAYS STRONG IN AMERICA. LOVE YOU ALL. BRANDON PRICE SOUTH PITTSBURG, TN.

Dear Randy, Thank you so much for sharing your site with me. This is so beautifull. When I saw your email this morning I had to cry, see, I am not a firefighter or a police woman, I am not even american, but I love your country so much and my heart still hurts because of what happened 9-11. I was always wondering what angels really look like, now I know by looking at your artwork. Because everyone that risks and gives his life for someone they don´t even know, must be an angel. I feel honored to be able to order this picture, and proud to show it to everybody I know here in Germany. Wonderfull work Randy!! Irene Pols Germany

Hello Randy, For awhile, I thought the tragic events of 9/11/01 were all but forgotten... except for the remaining heros who continue to work endlessly at Ground Zero, the self-sacrificing volunteers such as Suzannah B. Troy of NYC, and those whose lives were touched personally and irrevokably by the horror. Your work is a powerful reminder... one that will help us never to forget. Thank you from my heart. Randy, We lost our son on 2/23/01. He was Ptl. Michael Nickerson, Michael was shot and killed in the line of duty in responce to a routine noise complant. There was a memorial site established for him, this site has brought us great comfort, as we are able to read the messages people send. I believe it has also brought to his many friends a comfort aswell. The site you have created is a wounderful site, you should know that you have given a outlet to many who have messages to send. Thank You ........Joe and Sue Nickerson

Very moving and what a beautiful memorial to those who lost their lives. As a mother of a police officer who was killed in the line of duty in 1999, I know exactly what it means to have a lost loved one remembered in special ways. I'm sure these families will feel very honored. Thank you for taking the time and effort to do such a wonderful thing.

My name is Mark Nelson I am career fire fighter (IAFF Local 1664) in Montgomery County, Maryland just outside of WAshington, DC. When I am not wearing the hat of fire fighter, I am a musician and recording engineer. As a result of the attacks on September 11, 2001, I rewrote the lyrics and recorded the song "Knocking on Heaven's Door" in my home recording studio. I also called on some local musician friends to help me with my efforts. The end result was has been described as a very marketable product. Every cent of the money raised will go to will go to the New York Fire Fighters 9-11 relief fund that has been established by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). I am not seeking any personal monetary gain at all, nor are those who helped me record the song. I want to help the families of my fellow fire fighters who gave the ultimate and supreme sacrifice on September 11, 2001. Here are the re-written lyrics Mama please explain to me Why I can't see you anymore Bad men have taken you from me Feels like I'm knocking on heaven's door Chorus (4 times) KNOCK KNOCK KNOCKING ON HEAVENS DOOR Solo I hear that help is coming for me Will I see you again? I'm not sure These people will do their best for me But I might be knockin on heaven's door Chorus, Solo Mama this message for you is from me I will not see you anymore And to the one's who did this to me You won't be knocking on heaven's door Chorus End

Sept 11, 2001 will be a day that I will never forget and I will always remember where I was and what I was doing. I work for a larg steel Manufacturing company (Canada) and we had alot of our exects over there (NY) and I was the only link between our exects and there familys on that day. I remember feeling shocked, confused, and full of emotion once i new all our exects were located and conected with there families, I picked up the phone and called my family to tell them that I loved them. Since that day I promiced myself that I would change for the better my actions, reactions, how I treat people and what i value the real important things in life. I have been given a gift of gratitude. Thank you for sharing your web sit the Pictures are remarkable and beautiful. The heros the men and women that died on that day and ther brother's and sisters who tried so desperatly to help them I thank you for you showed me how and who i want to be and what we all should be compassionate for our fellow man and help one another. This is a superb photo mosaic depicting the fallen heroes of NYC. If you would like to see an oil painting which is equally moving then go to www.historicyorkshire.com to see the painting "Raising Freedom" by Yorkshire artist Joanne Shaw. It also depicts the 3 firemen raising the flag, whilst in the background stands the Statue of Liberty. To my knowledge, the original of this has been presented to the Mayor of New York to be contained in the Memmorial Exhibition. Chris Heath - Castleford, Yorkshire, ENGLAND.

Dear Randy, I am a Police Officer in Barnstable Massachusetts. I want to thank you for honoring the US Military, Fire Fighters, Police Officers and many other brave Americans, as well as those international guests of our nation , that lost their lives on that fateful day of September 11,2001. I will never forget that day, as long as I live. I have never been so overwhelmed by a single event in my entire life. I pray in my heart that these people di not suffer. I know that these feelings come from the deep sense of humanity that I have and hold for all people. I only wish that all people could share this feeling. There would be a lot less hate in the world. My message to all those who do not understand the greatness of our country is, "we are a country founded on the principle that all men are created equal, just as our forefathers wrote." Our greatnes is in our differences, not our similarities. We are a country that brings many resources to the table, from many different cultures, a country of all countries. We welcome everybody! We must not forget where we came from. That is what I believe makes us such a great nation. It is what makes me so proud to be an American. Thank you Randy, for what you did here for all Americans, and how you have paid tribute to all of the Military people, Firefighters, Police Officers, and innocent civilian victims of September 11, 2001. This reminds me of why I became a Police Officer in the first place. My mission in public safety is to do just that, make the public safe, no matter who they are. Thanks for making me feel good about what I do. With Sincere Gratitude, Kevin Donovan, Patrolman Barnstable, MA Police Department. 1200 Phinney's Lane Hyannis, MA 02601

Very nice. As one of the rescue personel sent to NYC to help, I stood at Ground Zero, looking at the massive piles, not believing that my eyes would ever see such devastation, hurt and pain. Being a firefighter/EMT, it does give some comfort to know that these hero's will not be forgotten. Thank you for caring, but make no mistake about, why must such an incident like the one everybody has to deal with now, bring what these persons have done all along, to the attension of the public. Again, I would like to thank you and hope the money raised by these posters can help the families out. South Jersey, we care.

I want to say thank you for the beautiful artwork that you have created. My 4 yr old son was a witness to the tragic acts via the television and he himself is a proud survivor of his father. He wants to be a fireman, policeman, and ambulance driver when he grows up. He is so small but yet so smart. I don't need a reminder of what happened, because it was etched in my heart forever. I want it to lift the brave ones, and the survivors of those who were abruptly taken from us on 9-11.

My message to all those who do not understand the great! ness of our country is, "we are a country founded on the principle that all men are created equal, just as our forefathers wrote." Our greatnes is in our differences, not our similarities.

Hello there Randy I recieved your e-mail and was for lack of a better word touched. I don't know how or why you e-mailed me but Im very glad that you did thank you. Since that day I promiced myself that I would change for the bet! ter my actions, reactions, how I treat people and what i value the real important things in life. Dear randy, As a "retired" volunteer fire chief, I must commen you on your work of art! After viewing Can't Cry Hard Enough, this is perhaps the definite reach into the souls of firefighters. Your choice of Amazing Grace brought back sad, yet bittersweet memories when we lost two of our twin cities finest during the blizzard of 1993. Your choice of NYFD's Father Judge on the more to see is perhaps the greatest acheivement in your poster-under the flag and by the firefighter's he loved so dearly, and died as well as the others so gallenty. Thank you for touching my soul again-i want to forget, but can never forget. As I tell my wife, once a firefighter, always a firefighter. Either male o! r female, volunteer or paid, it does not matter-the loss of one makes us cry-the loss of so many on Sept. 11th perhaps took a piece of us all and died with them. Thank you for your efforts-have forwarded your new site to many firefighting friends. Thank you for remembering our fallen brothers and sisters-I lost friends that tragic day, but hope and pray that they have found peace in their new world as we constantly struggle with the reality of ours...my final wish, I embrace and someday see you again! Great work-thank you from a "vetern" of twenty plus years. Past Fire Chief, John David Marko, Goodwill Vol. Hose Co., West Pittston, Pa.

Hello, First I feel I have to explain a little of my background. I am currently a Police Officer for Dallas PD in Oregon (yes, Dallas...small town). I have grown up here and my goal has always been Law Enforcement since I was a young boy. I am a third generation Cop, and hope that someday my own son will follow in the Family business. Prior to becoming a Cop, I was a Volunteer Fire Fighter, and an EMT Basic. This helped me through College, as well as staying out of trouble until I was old enough to get hired on as a Cop. When I brought up your website, I have to tell you..... I felt the chills crawl up my back, my eyes well up with tears, and my heart still hurts with all the sorrow and mourn for those families who are still asking themselves, "What if....?" I feel that I speak for more than myself when I extend my grattitude and appreciation for taking the time to make such a memorable tribute, for us to honor, and respect our fallen warriors. Sincerely, Ofc Ray Sizemore Dallas Police Department

They may be gone but their memories stay within the relms of my heart and memory. They were all truly special people and showed us that good still can overcome evil. Saying that they are some of New York's finest doesn't even come close to the unsurmountable respect that I have for them. Thank you for keeping their memory alive. May the God/dess bless you always! Zoe

Thanks for letting me know about your site. I am too exhausted in all aspects of being to explore other than this quick visit but please keep up the positive energy. It is an ongoing recovery in every way and our Front line heroes that are still alive and breathing have given their all and they continue you to do say. We need to pray for their health and spirits -- for all of us to keep going, focus on the positive and happy memories because they are there and recharge our batteries -- spirits, souls hearts and encourage each other. So thanks, best, Suzannah B. Troy artist and volunteer, NYC

Since that day I promiced myself that I would change for the bet! ter my actions, reactions, how I treat people and what i value the real important things in life. Dear randy, As a "retired" volunteer fire chief, I must commendyou on your work of art! After viewing Can't Cry Hard Enough, this is perhaps the definite reach into the souls of firefighters. Your choice of Amazing Grace brought back sad, yet bittersweet memories when we lost two of our twin cities finest during the blizzard of 1993. Your choice of NYFD's Father Judge on the more to see is perhaps the greatest achievement in your poster-under the flag and by the firefighter's he loved so dearly, and died as well as the others so gallantry. Great work-thank you from a "veteran" of twenty plus years.

I felt the chills crawl up my back, my eyes well up with tears, and my heart still hurts with all the sorrow and mourn for those families who are still asking themselves, "What if....?" I feel that I speak for more than myself when I extend my gratitude and appreciation for taking the time to make such a memorable tribute, for us to honor, and respect our fallen warriors. Sincerely, Ofc Ray Sizemore Dallas Police Department

That is a beautiful tribute to all the lives lost that day. My husband is a firefighter for the city of Baytown,Texas and the events that occurred on September 11 2001 touched home. That day may be gone but the spirit of those lives lost will never be forgotten. Mrs. J.Carr

I've only been a firefighter for three years but I grew up around the fire service. if i were to ever fall in the line of duty. i feel that i would like to be recognized for my duties. web sites like this one are important to show the bravery of men and women across the nation. i have never lost a friend in a fire and i hope i never will. ever ready' ever willing' loyal to our duty

Randy, as the wife of a firefighter, this makes me cry. I feel very selfish and grateful that my husband was not one of the fallen and have cried many times with him over the fallen bretheren. I think this is tasteful and a very heartwarming way to not only remember but also help those left behind heal. God bless and keep you and yours. Pam Weber
